Teaching & Learning

We recognise students are living in an era where knowledge is constantly changing, and to be well prepared for the future, students need strategies for personal adaptation. Our school has developed five core competencies to help students prepare for the future and become life-long learners.

These are:

  • Global Citizenship: Knowing about and relating to other people, the environment and the world.
  • Collaborative Learner: Knowing how to work with others to achieve a goal.
  • Self-Directed and Reflective Learner: Knowing and thinking about their learning.
  • Effective Communicator: Knowing how to successfully interact with other people, to gather information and express their ideas effectively.
  • Adaptable Thinker: Knowing how to think in different ways to learn effectively and move forward to new challenges.

Curriculum

Belmont Intermediate School fulfills the requirements of the National Curriculum. Students are taught mainly in homeroom classes, with specialist teaching of Technology, the Arts, Science, Japanese and Mandarin.

Specialist Subjects

Specialist classes provide an exciting and often new learning experience for our students. Class sizes are small to allow for individual attention. Students are grouped across their teaching and learning teams and participate in all specialist subjects over the year.

Japanese and Mandarin are taught in full classes; Year 8 learns Mandarin for the first half of the year so students are prepared for the China exchange in the second half of the year. Year 7 learns Japanese for terms 3 and 4.
